In
the early part of the 20th Century Sherwood Mockett decided to
plant a botanical garden in the meadow behind his home in Church
Street, St. Peter's Village, Kent, in England. His intention was
to create a place where family and visitors could enjoy walking
among many varieties of trees and plants, shaded from the hot
summer sun, or sheltered from the gusty winds which blew unhindered
across the bare Thanet landscape.
Nearly
a hundred years later, local people are realising that they have,
on their doorsteps, a small area of woodland that has evolved
and generated its own eco-system. Within its boundary lies a completely
sustainable wild life habitat.
